Details are now coming to light regarding a lawsuit filed by city police officer Jim Mauro against the local police association.
Mauro is seeking about $20,000 as restitution for lost wages after he was removed as the Thunder Bay Police Association’s bargaining chair in 2009.
Mauro has been embroiled in numerous controversies over the past few years, the most recent being a Police Act hearing in March in which Mauro was found guilty of discreditable conduct and was demoted from Sergeant to Constable within the Thunder Bay Police Service.
That case stemmed from a letter presented to an arbitrator with former police association president Keith Hobbs's name on it.
The evidence showed Mauro wrote the letter and submitted it without Hobbs' full approval.
That letter was also the focus of a special meeting of the Police Association in December 2009, in which the members voted 93 to 17 to remove Mauro as bargaining chair in light of the allegations.
In his court filing, Mauro says the vote was not supported by their constitution.
But the Association, in its defense, says their members had every right to remove Mauro, and they're asking for the application to be dismissed.
None of the claims have been proven in court, and there's no word on when the case will proceed.
