OPP Northwest Region News Release

(SIOUX LOOKOUT, ON) – The month of May has been designated as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month for the Province of Ontario to raise awareness to the facts surrounding sexual assault and the negative impact it has on survivors, family, and entire communities.

The Sioux Lookout Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to share that being alert to victim vulnerabilities and the needs of survivors can greatly reduce the incident of abuse and the impact these crimes have on our communities.

In 2014, the Sioux Lookout OPP investigated 32 sexual related crimes, slightly down from the 36 investigated in 2013.

“Despite efforts of the police and community partners, the number of reported sexual related crimes in the Sioux Lookout area has remained consistent over the past 5 years.

Parents need to educate their children both female and males from an early age about sexual assault awareness and consent.  Being aware of your surroundings, trusting your instincts and having an open discussion with family and friends is an important first step in prevention.  Encourage your family and friends to speak up as sexual abuse is “Never okay” said Staff Sergeant Nathan Schmidt, Sioux Lookout OPP Detachment Commander.
