THUNDER BAY – A May Street restaurant has been temporarily closed by the district health unit after the presence of rats was found inside the building.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit issued a temporary closure to Handu BBQ earlier this week, ordering measures to be taken to clean the restaurant before being allowed to reopen.

“At this point right now we’ve gone with closure and we will keep them closed until all the issues are dealt with,” public health inspector Torsten Schulz. “It’s yet to be determined whether or not we’re going to be issuing any offence notices or summons to court.”

The inspection was done as a result of complaints from customers received by the health unit.

Schulz described the presence of rodents as a health hazard.

There have been no reports of any illness or other health issues from customers of the restaurant.

“We’ve had a pest control company in there now. We’ve been in there and talked to the owner of the business and the owner of the building and we’re looking at planning measures to ensure rodents are trapped and they don’t come back in the building, the facility is clean and all the other issues are dealt with,” Schulz said.

This is the third time Handu BBQ has been forced to temporarily close since 2014.
