THUNDER BAY — What's old is new again.
For the second time, city administration is recommending a vacant lot on Miles Street East as the location for a temporary shelter village accommodating up to 100 people in modular housing units.
The same property was initially proposed in November 2024, but the scheme was abandoned, largely due to the objections of business owners in the south core.
After considering locations in the Intercity area and on Cumberland Street North, city council ultimately set its sights on the Kam River Heritage Park and issued a request for proposals from potential operators, but that plan was dropped last month.
The latest recommendation, set for discussion by council on July 14, calls for the village to be constructed at 114 Miles Street East, and for the Miles Street/Simpson Street area be added to the Eye on the Street program's Code of Practice.
Administration also recommends an annual contribution of $125,000 to the Fort William Business Improvement Association's budget to support its revitalization efforts and to address its concerns related to security and cleanliness.
City officials have called a news conference for Wednesday to provide more details.
