Mishkeegogamang resident dies after taking imitation opioid

A second victim became unconscious after taking the medication; a 59-year-old man is under arrest for trafficking.

PICKLE LAKE, Ont. – A Mishkeegogamang First Nation resident has died after ingesting what police say are illicit opioids made to look like pharmaceutical produced medication.

A second victim, from Pickle Lake, Ont., became unconscious after taking a dose of the fake Percocet/oxycodone pills. 

Ontario Provincial Police say they’ve arrested a 59-year-old Jack Moore of Pickle Lake in conjunction with the case.

The suspect was charged with trafficking a Schedule 1 substance. He appeared in court on Tuesday and has been remanded into custody.

The investigation into the death continues.

The names of the victims have been withheld pending notification of next of kin.
