THUNDER BAY – A 19-year-old man is facing charges after police allege he made a false report regarding an abandoned child.

Police say they made an extensive search on Monday night in the Intercity area after a man called claiming he’d transported a child, younger than eight, that he’d found in the city’s north end to Intercity Shopping Centre.

The incident spread rapidly on social media platforms.

As a result of the resources diverted to search for a child that did not exist, police have charged the suspect with public mischief and resisting arrest.

He has a court date on Aug. 22.
