Officials with the Thunder Bay Red Cross say they’re surprised with the resident’s lackluster response to recent domestic disaster relief.
Spokesman Rob Zuback says contributions total less than $3,000.
He says there might be a perception that in Canada, governments take care of disaster victims.
“There are some immediate needs that these people have too that even the government can’t necessarily deal with on its own,” he said. “The government asks the red cross to respond to assist. That’s how it works in Ontario and that’s how it works across the country.”
The Red Cross still welcomes cash donations for the flood relief efforts in Quebec and Manitoba, and also the Slave Lake fire.
