The forest fire situation in Northwestern Ontario could heat up over the next couple of days.
Ministry of Natural Resources officials say the fire hazard in the region remains high, and with scattered lightning storms across the region over the past couple of days, they're expecting several new fires to crop up in the next 24-to-48 hours.
The new fires will be added to the 71 that are currently burning across the region.
And it does not appear that the weather will be providing relief anytime soon.
While some scattered shower activity is in the forecast, it also expected that daytime heat will result in more lightning, which could cause even more fire activity.
So far this year there have been 435 fires confirmed in Northwestern Ontario, burning a total of more than 42,000 hectares.
