Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources is urging caution to anyone who may be lighting a campfire this weekend.
The warning comes after confirmation that there are 10 active fires in the region.
“We also have a couple fires in the Thunder Bay district,” said MNR spokeswoman Debbie MacLean. “One in particular is Thunder Bay fire no. 33, which started on June 15, and is about 20 kilometres northeast of Armstrong.
“It’s requiring a fair amount of commitment from our program, from both ground and air attacks.” The word of warning isn’t exclusive to large bon fires.
The MNR wants everyone who is burning a fire of any kind to practice caution, regardless of the magnitude of their outdoor fire.
“People definitely have to be aware of any kind of outdoor fire that they (are burning),” she said.
“If they’re out having a camp fire, certainly they have to attend it at all times and make sure that it is out before leaving.”
