Monsters and Mayhem lives up to the hype

Big trucks on big tires, motocross freestyle show draw plenty of cheers at Murillo Fairgrounds.

THUNDER BAY – Lee Hogan wasn’t sure what to expect when his wife gave him a pair of tickets to Saturday’s Monsters and Mayhem show.

He left the Murillo Fairgrounds loving every second of it.

He wasn’t alone.

Fans, many donning noise-cancelling headphones, packed the stands to hear the engines roar and monster trucks soar.

Toss in the mayhem – in this case the freestyle tricks of motocross and snowmobile acrobats – and it was an afternoon to remember.

“It was a pretty good show,” Hogan said.

“I liked the monster trucks, he liked the snow machine and the motor bike. It was all good.”

What’s not to love, he said, sheepishly admitting his love of the show may have come from within.

“I guess it’s the redneck inside me, I guess,” he said.

His 13-year-old son Miley said he had no idea his mother was giving the two of them tickets to the show, but was glad she did.

“I thought it was pretty cool, a lot of speed and stuff, sleds doing backflips,” the youngster said.

Dad might want to give a Father’s Day caution to his son, who might have caught the freestyle bug.

“I just thought it would be cool to do it, the adrenaline rush,” Miley said.

Could he picture himself strapped inside of the machines or taking to the sky on a motocross bike one day?

You bet.

“Sure,” he said, glancing at his father.

Thunder Bay’s Kai Jacobsen, 11 loved the reverse racer.

“I thought it was really cool that he could drive backwards and he was driving on the other side,” Kai said. “I liked the freestyle too.”

The competition wrapped up on Saturday night.
