STOUFFVILLE, Ont. — Approximately 30 dogs from two northern Ontario First Nations were scheduled to be picked up Monday afternoon and airlifted south to find new homes.

The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said a plane operated by Thunder Bay's North Star Air Ltd. plane would retrieve some dogs from a First Nation about 350 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, before flying to another First Nation to pick up more.

From there, the dogs were to be flown to Kapuskasing where they would be loaded onto Northern Legacy Farm's Bark Bus for a drive to Sudbury, arriving late Monday night.

Following initial assessment there, the dogs will be taken to various SPCA Animal Centres across Ontario and put up for adoption through groups that partner with it in the society's Year of the Northern Dog initiative.

The SPCA also credited the latest rescue mission to the leadership of the two First Nations and the efforts of four volunteers who went into the communities to gather the animals.

The names of the First Nations were not disclosed in a news release issued by the OSPCA. A spokesperson said the society did not have permission to release that information.
