FORT WILLIAM FIRST NATION  – Georjann Morriseau is stepping down as a Fort William First Nation councillor.

The former chief made the announcement last Thursday in a written statement to band leaders, citing her family, health, employment and the current circumstances of Fort William First Nation. She said true leadership results in the realization of when to step back and empower others.

“While I am saddened at the thought of departure, I am also comfortable with my decision and reflects a positive viewpoint,” Morriseau said.

“I have always maintained and truly believe that one does not need to be a chief or councillor to affect change and establish vision. We all have a role to play inf our nation is going to see the next 100 years of hope and prosperity. As members we share this responsibility on behalf of our children yet to come.”

Morriseau replaced Collins for the position of chief in 2013, but was defeated by Collins when he ran for re-election in 2015. Morriseau also successfully ran for council last year.

She also sought the federal Liberal nomination in Thunder Bay-Rainy River last year, but dropped out of the race, citing family reasons.
Morriseau, who thanked her family for standing by her, as well as council elders, adding she’ll still be involved in the community.

“I will remain an active member of my First Nation as well as an active member of the community at large and contribute toward positive outcomes that will have equal benefit for each and every one of us,” she said.
