THUNDER BAY -- Georjann Morriseau says she's ready to represent the region.
The chief of Fort William First Nation announced Tuesday that she's seekign the federal Liberal nomination for Thunder Bay-Rainy River. Morriseau said after being approached and reflecting on the issues, it was time for her to put her name in.
"It's a huge personal decision. It's not one that came easily," she said.
Morriseau prides herself on being accessible to her community and Thunder Bay. She wants to be that for the whole region. It's also time for change she said with more young leaders stepping up.
"Now is a better time than ever," she said.
She will be staying on as chief of Fort William First Nation, a community of people she credits for getting her where she is today and wants to maintain that role.
"They're the reason I'm here," she said.
If successful, Morriseau would likely be the first Aboriginal candidate in the riding's history. While that would be an honour, she hopes to represent everyone in the riding and help bridge the gap between Aboriginal people and the rest of Canada.
"I'm a candidate for everybody but I think what it will do is it will help empower our Aboriginal people to come out and vote but it will also empower our Aboriginal people to also participate and be a part of the change here in the country," she said.
