THUNDER BAY — Cameron Whitford feels privileged to have witnessed an interaction between a bear and a cub on Mount McKay.
"It was an amazing sight," the amateur photographer said Wednesday while describing the encounter that occurred Sunday on the road to the lookout on Fort William First Nation.
Whitford's photo showing a tender face-to-face moment between the sow and her cub was posted on Thunder Bay and District Photography's Facebook page.
He was on his way to a powwow about noon when he spotted the bears walking along the side of the road.
"I'm a very cultural person. I'm Anishinabe, and that's a sign, you know. I talked to the elders right afterwards and they said we have to dance. That was a sign that the bears showed. They are protectors."
Whitford said it looked as if the mother bear was possibly eating berries, "and the little guy was running around her and standing up. It was pretty neat watching them like that."
Dozens of people have posted comments about the photo such as '"Absolutely amazing. Life at its best," and "How sweet. Thanks for sharing."
