The regional coroner and city police are making a plea to the mother of an infant that was found deceased Monday afternoon to come forward.

"We're worried about the health and well-being of the mother," said regional coroner Michael Wilson.

The mother is encouraged to reach out to Wilson, who says they can call his office in confidence, the police or health care providers.

"Somebody that may be involved in something like this could have issues, could be going through a lot themselves," said Chris Adams, executive officer with the Thunder Bay Police Service.

A 911 was placed at 1:30 p.m. Monday to police from a passerby that had discovered what they believed to be an infant in a wooded area off a pathway along the southern bank of the Neebing River.

Investigators with the police service marked off a crime scene around a wooded area on the north side of Delaney Arena, from the skate park to the CEISS building Monday afternoon and Adams said the area could be secured by police for another day or two.

Adams confirmed a post-mortem has been scheduled for Wednesday in Toronto.

"That's very important to determine age and some other vital information as well as give investigators more information to go on," he said.

Police are withholding the child's gender so they can determine fact from fiction when receiving tips.

A special tip line has been set up at 684-1055. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers.
