Motorcyclist dies from injuries after weekend crash

THUNDER BAY -- A motorcyclist involved in a crash on Highway 11 in Greenstone last weekend has died.

Robert Gratton, a 64-year-old from Casselman, Ont., died in hospital in Thunder Bay on Tuesday, two days after a collision with a car on the highway at Kenogamisis Dam Road just after 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, according to an OPP news release issued late Thursday afternoon.

Gratton suffered serious injuries after he was thrown into the ditch on the north side of the highway. He was rushed to Geraldton District Hospital and was later flown to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

The driver of the vehicle, a 22-year-old Geraldton man, allegedly fled the car but was later located. He now faces charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, impaired driving causing death, operation of a motor vehicle with over 80 milligrams of alcohol causing death and failure to remain at the scene.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled for a bail hearing at the Thunder Bay Courthouse on Friday.
