THUNDER BAY -- Mount Baldy made snow on Sunday night for the first time this season.
The ski hill on the outskirts of Thunder Bay had snowfall in place of the rain that pelted the city over the holidays, making its December conditions among the best in years, despite the late start.
"We have better conditions now than we've had in a long time," said the hill's owner and operator Craig Spiess.
"(Sunday) is the official day we're going to start making snow. Everybody's on natural snow. We have 90 per cent of the mountain open."
Spiess plans to add apparatuses for snowboards and twin tipped skiers over the coming days as the artificial snow will protect the hill from wind that could otherwise turn the packed snow to ice.
"Most people didn't realize we had the snow," Spiess said, adding ticket sales have been skyrocketing as the word gets out about snow conditions.
"They're coming out and saying, 'holy smokes, why is it so white out here?'"
