An inmate involved in a violent incident at a local prison has died and police have charged a man with first-degree murder.

Officials with city police confirmed Tuesday morning that they have charged 19-year-old Adam Mark Capay, of Lac Seul, with first-degree murder in connection with the violent incident.

Thirty-five-year-old Sherman Kirby Quisses died Monday morning from injuries he sustained Sunday morning from a sharp object. Det. Insp. Don Lewis said a postmortem was conducted in Toronto on Tuesday morning but the results aren’t in yet. He couldn’t say what the sharp object was.

It’s alleged that Quisses was involved in an altercation with Capay. Police were called to the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre just before 6 a.m. Sunday. Lewis said he doesn’t know if the two men knew each other.

“All we can confirm is that they were both inmates in the same common area,” he said.

That common area houses around 30 inmates.

“They all would have access to one another. It’s not as if it’s a cell type area that you would typically see in a jail,” Lewis said.

Because the men were in prison as the result of other police service investigations, Lewis couldn’t say what they were in jail for.

To the police service’s knowledge, it’s the first time a murder has happened at the facility. The investigation continues and Lewis said there will be a mandatory inquest called as a result of the death.
Updated information will be published after the suspect’s court appearance.
