THUNDER BAY -- Police have laid a murder charge after a 52-year-old man died in hospital days after being found injured on the city's south side.

The Thunder Bay Police Service on Tuesday confirmed they have arrested 32-year-old David Vernon Gregorovich, charging him with second-degree murder for the death of Andrew Ayre.

Det.-Insp. Ryan Hughes said paramedics were originally called to the corner of Victoria Avenue and North Street on the afternoon of April 25, where Ayre was found unconscious. Police were subsequently alerted to his condition and began an investigation.

Ayre was taken to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, where he died on Monday from his injuries. Hughes said Ayre was able to communicate with paramedics and investigators prior to his death.

Gregorovich, who has also been charged with robbery, was arrested on Monday night at about 10:30 p.m.

Investigators are still working to determine a possible motive, Hughes said, not ready to characterize the incident as a case of a robbery gone wrong.

"We're trying to figure out what the cause of the incident was," Hughes said.

Hughes said the incident, which happened in the area of Newfie's Pub, was captured on video. Investigators do not believe that any weapons were involved.

"There is a lot of foot traffic and vehicular traffic in the Victoria (and) Brodie area," Hughes said. "We're asking anybody that may have saw something in that area to give police a call."

Gregorovich, who has also been charged with robbery, appeared in court on Tuesday and remains in custody with a future appearance date. The charges have yet to be tested in court.
