Murder trial facing more hurdles

A 2009 Thunder Bay murder case remains stuck in limbo, as the accused is in a fight with Legal Aid to have his lawyer of choice represent him.

A 2009 Thunder Bay murder case remains stuck in limbo, as the accused is in a fight with Legal Aid to have his lawyer of choice represent him.

Leif Hobson, 22, is facing charges of first-degree murder, committing an indignity to human remains, robbery and arson.

Hobson is accused of killing 65-year-old Edgar Marion, and deliberately setting his car on fire with the victim's body inside.

That car was found in a wooded area north of the Thunder Bay Expressway.

Hobson has previously been represented by lawyers George Joseph and David Gibson. But he parted ways with both of them, and remains without a lawyer nearly three years later.

On Friday an application was put before the courts asking for Toronto lawyer Devin Bains to represent Hobson.

But Legal Aid officials are opposing that, because Bains is seeking extra compensation for his travel expenses to handle the case.

A judge's decision is pending.
