THUNDER BAY -- The sounds of holiday music are filling a south-side grocery store.

On Wednesday and Thursday peer leadership students from Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute are performing Christmas tunes for their Songs for Supper, a fundraising event for Christmas Cheer and Shelter House.

Grade 12 student Tyler Height said this is the ninth year they’ve held Songs for Supper at the Arthur Street Safeway and they usually raise about $2,000. In addition to students performing music, they also have greeters at the entrances collecting donations.

“It feels really nice to be able to come and help out the community and it’s nice when you’re able to ask students to help and they don’t even hesitate. They come help us,” said Height.

“We have a lot of talent at our school that can sing and play instruments. They’re all willing to come and perform at Safeway for the people to raise money for the people that need it.”

From noon to 5 p.m. on both days, there will be a rotation of students singing and playing various instruments.

Height said it also feels great to give back to the community.

“Thunder Bay is a great city and it’s awesome to be able to help raise money for those people.”
