NAN unhappy with controversial police commendations

Representatives of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation are speaking out against what they say are controversial commendations that were handed out to several OPP officers last week.

Officers involved in a dispute in Pikangikum First Nation last year were commended for their exemplary performance, and another officer who shot a First Nations woman in Kenora was given an award for bravery.

Grand Chief Stan Beardy said rewarding officers in this manner is sending the wrong message to First Nations people.

Beardy calls the commendations unnecessary.
