THUNDER BAY -- Nishnawbe Aski Police Service officers might have avoided a looming strike.

Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada’s bargaining team has reached a tentative deal with NAP that will be put to the membership a day ahead of members being in a legal strike or lockout position.

“I am very proud of our bargaining team for all their work and to the officers who stood strong and lobbied their provincial and federal political representatives to fund First Nations policing effectively,” said Sharon DeSousa, PSAC Regional executive vice-president for Ontario, in a release issued by the union on Thursday after a two-day bargaining session.

The membership still must vote on the deal, terms of which were not released.

Our officers are thankful for the overwhelming support we received from the communities we service during this difficult round of negotiations” said police officer and local union president Jason Storkson,

“We are proud of the work we do and are working hard to make our First Nations policing program the best it can be.”
