Nelson pleads guilty to manslaughter, aggravated assault

THUNDER BAY - A man originally charged with second-degree murder in connection to the 2017 death of a Thunder Bay man has pleaded guilty to the charge of manslaughter.

Nazareth Alexander Nelson, 36, entered the guilty plea in a Thunder Bay Courtroom Wednesday morning for his role in the death of 25-year-old, Bert Issac Wood. He also pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault, with one of the assault counts having initially been a charge of attempted murder.  

Police responded to an incident on the morning of Sept. 10, 2017 at a home in the 200 block of Syndicate Avenue North.

When officers arrived, Wood was found deceased and a 25-year-old man and a 23-year-old women were found injured. It was determine the man and woman were victims of an assault.

Nelson was arrested later that evening and charged with second-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and breach of probation.

Police said all those involved in the incident were known to each other.

Nelson will be in court again this spring to set a date for sentencing.
