Gaps in cell service of up to four hours have been caused by upgrades to TBayTel’s network, said a company official Monday.
The upgrades began on Sept. 19 as part of a plan to enhance the network’s coverage and capacity, said director of corporate relations Barry Streib.
“In terms of the growth, it was unexpected. In terms of the new technology and the uptake from our customers it was incredible,” he said. “As a result, we had some capacity issues that we’re now taking care of.”
The company’s customer base grew significantly when they took over Rogers’ customers’ contracts in Thunder Bay in November last year.
Streib said the network they deployed then is now in need of upgrades to ensure capacity and signal strength.
“The network that is going to be the end result of all of the work we’re putting in will be the kind of network our customers are expecting and will give them the kind of service that 4G HSPA+ technology can provide for them,” he said.
Some customers will continue to face outages while the work continues.
Streib said anyone with any concerns can consult the website, and leave feedback on any issues they may be experiencing.
