THUNDER BAY — The federal government is poised to announce a third grant to the Thunder Bay Art Gallery for the construction of a new building on the waterfront.
On Thursday, Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Patty Hajdu will attend a news conference at the gallery's existing site adjacent to Confederation College.
In a notice to news media, the gallery says the announcement will include an update on the project and an announcement regarding funding.
Hajdu, the minister of Indigenous Services and minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, revealed earlier this month that "Thunder Bay has a funded project" under the federal Green and Inclusive Communities Building program.
That's the program for which the art gallery submitted an application last year.
Ottawa has already provided two sources of funding to the project.
In 2018, Hajdu announced $11.5 million under the Cultural Spaces Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage.
The next year, she announced a further $3.5 million from FedNor.
Conceptual drawings of a larger, two-storey gallery to replace the 46-year-old facility near the college were unveiled in 2016.
At the time, officials said that in the best-case scenario the new gallery would open by 2019.
