The developers of the newest mine in northwestern Ontario say the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has given the go-ahead for construction of the tailings facility for their gold mine in the District of Rainy River.

New Gold Inc. made the announcement today in a news release. The company plans to begin production at the site northwest of Fort Frances by the middle of next year.

Earlier this year New Gold determined that changes were needed to the original designs for both its water and tailings management facilities "where the strength of the foundation is less than was estimated for the original designs."

The company says the MNRF approved the revisions for water management in mid-August, and yesterday gave approval to begin construction on the tailings management facility.

New Gold states that the Rainy River project enhances its "growth pipeline through its significant production scale at below current industry average costs."

More than two dozen Thunder Bay-based companies have successfully bid for contracts to help build and supply the mine

The Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission estimates the impact on the city's economy at $70 million.
