The city is hoping a new program will make biking to local businesses easier on the eyes.
The bike rack for business program, which launched Friday morning, will increase bike parking for local businesses by giving them discounts on bike racks.
But it’s more than just a bike rack.
The installation will feature images from four local artists as well. Active transportation coordinator Adam Krupper said one of the barriers for people cycling in the city is that there weren’t enough places to lock up a bike once they arrived at a business. That left them having to chain their bike to anything they could find, including gas lines.
“That’s a problem,” Krupper said.
The piece of cycling art a business gets will depend on the what image route, which includes the May, Memorial and Algoma route, The Arthur Street Route and Red River Road, the business is on.
There will also be a standard rack available to other city businesses not on those routes. The racks, which will cost up to $300, have already been requested by 32 businesses.
“Today’s the official launch so we’ve had a lot of positive interest from the business community,” Krupper said.
