Nine jobs cut as DSSAB re-organizes

The Thunder Bay District Social Services Board has cut nine jobs as part of their re-organization strategy to improve delivery of services.

The Thunder Bay District Social Services Board has cut nine jobs as part of their re-organization strategy to improve delivery of services.

DSSAB CAO Melissa Harrison made the announcement Tuesday that there would be changes to the senior management team. She said they were working on an integrated client services delivery model, which would make it easier for people to access services by having to deal with a single staff member.

As a result of the reorganization, nine people have lost their jobs.

Harrison said they would post new jobs and the nine who lost their jobs would be eligible to apply as well as members of the public.

“A number of positions have been eliminated, others have had modifications and changed,” Harrison said. “There have been nine individuals laid off as a result of the reorganization and basically we’ll also have a number of positions advertised this week within the organization.”

She said the new management is meant to support the integration of the services at the new $14 million building on Brodie Street and in the region.

“Historically licensed child care and social housing in Ontario Works programs have been delivered by DSSAB in silos by separate groups of staff based on how the different programs have been funded by the province and by the municipalities,” she said.

“This requires clients to deal with several different staff for routine matters and it is certainly not the most efficient way to deliver our services. We want to deliver services to our clients in a more holistic matter so they don’t have to repeat their story to receive their services.”
