THUNDER BAY -- The Thunder Bay District Health Unit continues to see growing numbers of COVID-19 cases considered to be variants of concern.

On Thursday nine previously announced cases were determined to be variant cases, bringing the total number in the district to 50 since the first batch of cases were detected a month ago.

The health unit also announced five new cases on Thursday, which leaves the region's active case count at 45, the same as on Wednesday. The region's seven-day, per-100,000 rate is 22.01, which is the lowest it's been since Jan. 2. It's also the sixth straight reporting day the health unit has reported single-digit cases.

Four of the cases are considered to reside in district communities, while the fifth lives in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas.
