NIPIGON, Ont. -- The province is investing $1 million for Nipigon’s waterfront development plans.

In a news release issued Wednesday morning, officials with the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines confirmed that the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation would be making the funds available to the Township of Nipigon.

The money will be used for the town’s Railway Street lookout tower and rest area, which aim to provide visitors with a view of the community’s waterfront and the Nipigon River Bridge, which will be Ontario’s first cable-stay bridge on a provincial highway.

Nipigon’s waterfront plans also include the construction of a lagoon boardwalk, which aims to provide the public with access to the water’s edge and an events park to host special events and festivals.
