THUNDER BAY - There are no reports of injuries after an early afternoon fire at a south side home left homeowners shaken.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews responded to reports of a structural fire on the 1000 block of Rosedale Avenue just before 12:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
Upon arrival, crews observed smoke coming from the top vents of the home and a second alarm was called.
According to Thunder Bay Fire Rescue platoon chief, Philip Dzuba, crews entered the home and determined the fire was located in a basement storage room.
“It looks like it is in one of the storage rooms and travelled up to the second floor but we managed to get it knocked down and everything is under control,” he said.
Crews brought the fire under control within 15 minutes but Dzuba said because the house is an older balloon style construction, crews will need to remain on the scene to monitor the situation.
“This is why we have to wait on this one here,” he said. “Because the smoke has travelled up the wall and along the attic and along the vents, now we have to make sure the heat hasn’t caught something on fire in the wall.”
Fire crews will wait to see if any heat builds up in the walls and will use a thermal cameras to check for any hotspots.
“If that is the case, then we will have to start opening up the walls, but hopefully that doesn’t happen,” Dzuba said.
No one was home at the time of the fire and there are no reports of any injuries. There is no word yet on the cause of the fire.
