THUNDER BAY – A Rowand Street resident escaped injury when her home was engulfed by fire.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, in a release issued on Friday, said the occupant self-evacuated after discovering the smoke and fire conditions inside her residence and took comfort at a friend’s home.

Crews arrived at the scene to find thick black smoke emanating from the entire structure, and breached the front door to gain entrance to the main floor.

A second alarm was initiated and two more pumpers and an aerial ladder responded.

Crews quickly extinguished a fire in the dugout basement section of the home, saving it from becoming fully engulfed, reducing the overall damage.

The fire is under investigation and TBFR personnel are on scene trying to determine the cause. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminds the public to have working smoke detectors on all levels of their homes.
