THUNDER BAY -- The Valhalla Inn had to be evacuated for about four hours early Friday morning.

At about 1 a.m. a fire began in the ceiling of the Timbers Restaurant. There were no injuries, but it took some time to clear the smoke out of the building.

Firefighters say there appears to have been significant damage, and the cause is under investigation.

"I asked a manager, and it seemed to have (started) in a serving area," said Platoon Chief Dave Long. "(Near an area) where they have the pop, glasses and juices, and the fire was up above that. Where it exactly started, we'll have to let the inspectors determine that."

Long says more than 200 guests and hotel staff were taken by transit buses to the nearby Airlane hotel as they dealt with the situation.
