Thunder Bay District Health Unit release

With students now back at school, the Northwest Tobacco Control Area Network is calling out for high school, post-secondary and community groups to participate in the TRYPs program where they may be eligible to receive up to $1,000 for smoking-reduction projects aimed at young people between the ages of 13 to 24.

TRYPS, the Tobacco Reduction in Youth Partnerships program, collaborates with schools and organizations on activities that focus on reducing commercial tobacco use among young people in Northwestern Ontario. Through TRYPs, groups can receive funding for their smoking-reduction focused activities along with program support from public health youth engagement staff.

Proposals for TRYPs financial support are now being accepted. TRYPs eligibility criteria includes:

  • Primary focus is to reduce commercial tobacco use among youth or young adults
  • Projects focused on traditional tobacco are eligible
  • Collaborate with public health to achieve success together

Past TRYPs projects have included programming such as smoke-free dances, smoke-free art projects and smoke-free school challenges, and have engaged communities from Marathon to Kenora.

If you already have an idea and even if you don’t, public health unit staff can help develop ideas and turn them into activities that deliver positive health benefits for all participants.

“Planning fun and engaging activities for youth with the objective of delivering a smoking reduction message is a great way to link fun and learning with positive health outcomes. The TRYPs program is a great fit for groups that offer programming for young people and want to promote healthy living,” says Kellie Milani, Youth Development Specialist for NW TCAN.

Those interested in the program are asked to submit an online TRYPs proposal which can be found at tbdhu.com or nwhu.on.ca. Projects anticipated for 2017 must have proposals submitted by October 16 to ensure enough time is given to plan appropriately.

For more information about TRYPs, contact Kellie Milani, at (807)625-5991.
