KENORA, Ont. — The number of active COVID-19 cases in the catchment area of the Northwestern Health Unit fell significantly over the weekend.

NWHU reported Monday morning that there are currently 233 high-risk cases in its service area, compared with 409 on Friday.

But more than half the active cases are in the Sioux Lookout Health Hub, which includes remote First Nations.

Kasabonika Lake, Mishkeegogamang and Pikangikum First Nations have all had high case numbers recently.

According to data released by NWHU on Friday, there were 2,160 active cases per 100,000 population on First Nations in the Sioux Lookout Health Hub at that time.

By comparison, the rate within the entire NWHU catchment area was 467/100,000.

In the service area of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, the rate on Friday was less than half that.

As of Monday, NWHU's current seven-day positivity rate for COVID-19 tests is 26.1 per cent.

This is down from 32.7 per cent last Friday.
