November housing starts equal to 2013, year-to-date still lagging: CMHC

THUNDER BAY -- Housing starts for 2014 continue to lag significantly behind 2013.

THUNDER BAY -- Housing starts for 2014 continue to lag significantly behind 2013.

The November housing starts report, assembled and published by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation, shows that there were 14 new single-detached starts and a pair of multi-use home starts last month.

The 16 total starts is exactly what November of 2013 saw, but construction as a whole in 2014 is down across the board in the Thunder Bay area.

Year to date numbers show there have been 155 single home starts for 2014, which compares to 184 in 2013.

For multi-unit construction, only 60 starts have been recorded in 2014. Meanwhile, 131 multi-unit starts were on the books in this area for 2013.

But despite these year-to-date totals, officials with the CMHC say THunder Bay home starts have been trending upwards over the past six months.
