DRYDEN, Ont. - For the second time in the last two weeks, a court case serves as a reminder that the province has rules governing any work on shorelines and Crown land.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says a Dryden man has been fined $1,000 for unlawfully dredging shore lands without a permit.

Court was told that over a period of three weeks last May, the man dredged the shoreline on Pronger Lake where he has a residence.

He did so without obtaining a work permit.

The man was also required to rehabilitate the shoreline.

According to the MNRF, he cooperated fully with the ministry in undertaking mitigation measures, which likely included erosion control.

A spokesperson in the ministry's Dryden enforcement unit said when property-owners follow the rules and apply for work permits for this kind of project, it gives MNRF staff the opportunity to review their plans and provide information on best practices.

Earlier this month, the ministry released details of a case in the Ignace area in which a Thunder Bay man was fined $5,000 for extracting gravel, building a road to cottage lots, and constructing a beach without approval.
