NWHU reports 7 new COVID-19 cases

Active cases rise to 90 in Northwestern Health Unit, with new infections reported in Fort Frances, Kenora, Sioux Lookout health hubs.

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Northwestern Health Unit reported seven new COVID-19 cases Sunday, with its active case count rising to 90.

Three of the new cases were in the NWHU’s Fort Frances health hub, with another two in each of the Kenora and Sioux Lookout hubs.

The Kenora hub had the most active cases across the health unit, with 36. Active cases have also been on the rise in the Fort Frances hub, with 26 active as of Sunday.

Meanwhile active cases have declined to 13 in the Sioux Lookout hub and 4 in the Emo hub, and remain low in hubs including Dryden (4), Rainy River (2), Red Lake (2), and Atikokan (1).

Three NWHU residents were in hospital with the virus as of Sunday, unchanged from the previous day.

The health unit had an incidence rate of 79.8 cases per 100,000 people for April 22 to 28, the most recent week reported by Public Health Ontario.

That compared to incidence rates of 36.7 in the neighbouring Thunder Bay District Health Unit and 176 province-wide over the same period.

The testing positivity rate in the NWHU fell to 3.25 per cent with 1,815 tests completed for April 19 to 25. That was down from a positivity rate of 4.04 per cent on 1,261 tests the week before.

A total of 27,411 vaccine doses have been administered across the health unit, which serves an estimated population of 82,231.

The NWHU has reported a total of 946 confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began. Of those, 90 are active and 856 considered resolved, including seven deaths.
