THUNDER BAY -- A city police officer was injured during an incident with two intoxicated men early Friday morning.
Officials with the Thunder Bay Police Service say the incident took place just after 2:30 a.m. In the parking log of McDonald's Restaurant on Memorial Avenue.
Police say an officer was approached by an intoxicated man who requested a ride home. When the officer offered to call a taxi, the man became belligerent and demanded that the officer give him a ride.
The officer arrested the 32-year-old man for being intoxicated in a public place, handcuffed him and placed him in the back of the car.
As the officer was getting into the vehicle, the second intoxicated man opened passenger side back door to let the arrested man escape.
The officer was able to apprehend the cuffed man, but was injured in the process.
The 39-year-old man was then charged with obstructing a police officer, resisting arrest and being intoxicated in a public place.
Both men were brought to the Balmoral Police Station.
The officer was treated at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and has since been released.
