One in custody following White River armed robbery

OPP say the suspect entered a service station on March 9 in White River where he brandished a handgun and demanded money from the cash register.

WHITE RIVER — An individual is in custody following an armed robbery incident in White River on Tuesday.

Superior East Ontario Provincial Police said they responded to the incident on Tuesday, March 9 at approximately 3:20 a.m. at a service station in White River, according to a news release.

Police say the lone individual entered the business, brandished a handgun and demanded money from the cash register. The employee complied with demands and did not sustain any injuries.

The suspect fled in a vehicle heading westbound on Highway 17, police said.

Officers successfully located the vehicle and deployed a spike belt on Highway 17 approximately 10 kilometres east of Terrace Bay. The suspect fled from the vehicle into the surrounding wooded area on foot.

Members from OPP detachments in Marathon, Schreiber and with the assistance of the Northwest Emergency Response Team located the suspect at approximately 7:50 a.m.

William Denney-Harper was arrested and is charged with robbery with a firearm, using a firearm to commit an offence, pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with a court order.

The accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
