THUNDER BAY – One of the two accused in the 2020 death of Christopher Meeseetawageesic has pleaded guilty to the charge of manslaughter.

Kenneth Moonias, 31, appeared before Justice Bruce Fitzpatrick on Friday in a Thunder Bay courtroom, where he pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder but guilty to the lesser included charge of manslaughter.

No facts were read into the record on Friday. A sentencing and Gladue report have been ordered and the matter was adjourned to December to set a date for sentencing.

Moonias was first charged on Sept. 3, 2020 following an investigation by the Thunder Bay Police Service. Police also arrested 33-year-old Natalie Moonias at the same time and charged her with second-degree murder.

Officers were first called to the 400 block of Main Street on the morning of Aug. 30, 2020 after receiving reports of a deceased male in the area.

The male was located by police and identified as 31-year-old Meeseetawageesic of Thunder Bay. An investigation revealed his death was the result of a homicide.

Natalie Moonias was scheduled to enter a plea and be sentenced on Friday, but because she was unable to appear in person or via video from the Monteith Correctional Complex, counsel agreed to adjourn the matter to Dec. 1, 2022.

Kenneth Moonias remains in custody at the Thunder Bay District Jail.
