THUNDER BAY — One person was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation and burn injuries after a fire at a south-side home Wednesday morning.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue told Newswatch the fire at a home in the area of Gore Street and Home Avenue was called in by a passerby reporting a lot of black smoke just after 7 a.m. Platoon chief Stephen Vincent said six pumper trucks, an aerial unit and a command unit was involved in the fire department’s response.
Superior North EMS took one person to hospital, Vincent said, adding that he didn’t know the extent of the person’s injuries.
The house suffered heavy fire damage on the main floor he said.
Kevin Anderson, the service's division chief of fire prevention, said the cause of the fire was investigated and was found to have been caused by improper disposal of a cigarette.
In a media release issued Wednesday morning, the fire department said it "would like to remind the public to use care when using and discarding smoking materials and to call 911 immediately when an emergency occurs."
