THUNDER BAY -- This could be the city's coldest February ever.

An extreme cold warning for Thunder Bay is the latest in a string of cold weather to hit the city with a wind chill of -43C Wednesday night and similar temperatures expected Thursday evening. During the day that windchill is expected to creep up to around -25C or -30C.

"We're in the middle of a cold snap that seems to never end," Environment Canada's Peter Kimbell said.

All of this cold weather has put the city's mean February temperature so far at -19.2C, well below the -12C average. Kimbell said the last time the city had that mean temperature was 1936.

Friday and Saturday has an expected high of -12C but that will dip back down to -20C by Sunday. Even next week's -13C high is well below normal.

"There really isn't a whole lot of hope for relief," Kimbell said.

"I'm sure people are fed up with it."

Kimbell said the city can take comfort in the fact that it isn't alone. A cold mass has even dropped places like Atlanta to -10C and Orlando to 2C.
