THUNDER BAY -- An online petition is calling for a proposed Event Centre to be ‘taken to a vote.’

Created about a month ago, the change.org campaign was created by Rikel Wirkunen of Thunder Bay, who is going after an aggressive 55,000 signatures. The petition is titled simply “have a public vote on the event centre.

“I don't know if you support the event center, but I think both supporters and non supporters should sign this petition to have the event center taken to a vote because if the majority of Thunder Bay feels that the city can't afford it, then council needs to listen,” states the petition description.

The description does not appear to specify how such a vote would be conducted, or what the exact questions to voters would be.
In a February post by the petition creator, Wirkkunene admits “… just because a petition goes through does not mean it will be heeded.”

He adds that he doesn’t’ intend to stop the construction or pursuit of an event centre, but wants to persuade elected officials that an event centre project is not the desire of the city’s majority.
