FORT FRANCES, Ont. — Investigations are underway after the death of a firefighter working under contract for the Ontario government in the Fort Frances district, following a medical emergency.

A statement from the Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) agency said the firefighter passed away after being transported to hospital on July 15.

The identity of the individual was not released, however the AFFES said he was a former ministry firefighter and a respected colleague of many people in the fire program.

The statement offered heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Fire information officer Chris Marchand said the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry (MNDMNRF) is working with the OPP, the ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, the coroner's office and the contract service provider to investigate the circumstances.

"We extend our heartfelt thanks to our wildland fire contractors who have offered support and staff to help us fight these fires across northwestern Ontario," Marchand said.

He said the AFFES and MNDMNRF remain committed to provide a safe work environment for their staff and partners during this period of heightened fire activity in Northwestern Ontario.
