OPG implosion ahead of schedule due to weather (11 PHOTOS)

The blast, which could be heard across the city, went off at exactly 9 p.m.

THUNDER BAY - The final implosion of the former Ontario Power Generation Station's deconstruction process, located on Mission Island, happened Thursday evening, a day ahead of schedule.

The implosion was originally planned for Friday but crews decided over concerns of weather and wind conditions to move the blast ahead to Thursday night.

The blast, which could be heard across the city, went off at exactly 9 p.m. and, from a distance, appeared to go off without a hitch taking down the two boilers.

As they made up about 40 per cent of the original facility, they dropped a tremendous amount of debris and created a huge dust cloud that was visible from many places along the water.

Dougall media will be speaking with the site manager, Jeremy Later, on Friday to discuss how the operation went and future plans for clearing the rest of the site.
