THUNDER BAY – The provincial police force is urging motorists to be attentive to motorcycles on Ontario highways.

The OPP issued a media release Thursday cautioning driver and motorcycle riders to use caution while travelling.

So far this year there have been 22 motorcycle fatalities in OPP jurisdiction, after there were 32 deaths last year.

There has been one fatality from a motorcycle collision in Northwestern Ontario, when a 52-year-old London, Ont. man died after his motorcycle collided with a van in Shuniah at the intersection of Highway 11/17 and Highway 587.

Drivers are reminded motorcyclists are more vulnerable than other drivers because they are tougher to see and the vehicles offer minimal protection if there is a crash.

Drivers should pay particular attention at intersections, where one-third of collisions occur.

Motorcyclists should not assume drivers can see them and always wear a proper helmet and bright, protective gear to increase visibility.
