OPP News Release

(RED LAKE, ON) – On July 1, 2015 Red Lake Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were on Marine patrol within the Municipality of Red Lake.

While on patrol the OPP officers laid several charges to operators and passengers of marine vessels.  These charges included three vessels not having proper lighting while operating at night, one vessel not having the appropriate life jackets and one alcohol related offence inside a vessel.

Boating is meant to be a fun activity but when operators are disrespectful and ignore the laws, boating can become frustrating and dangerous. Some helpful reminders to boat operators will ensure that it can be enjoyed by all.

• Ensure that each person on board has a properly fitting and Transport Canada approved lifejacket or PFD
• Have a pre-departure checklist to confirm that all mandatory equipment is on board, including sound signalling device, pump or bailing bucket and visual signalling device
•  Let someone know your trip plan
• Remember that impaired boating is the same as impaired driving
• Be respectful of shorelines, swimmers and docks – slow down

Boat operators that are mindful of the rules and regulation and respectful of others using the waterways will help to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer.
