MARATHON—Racing on isolated stretches of the Trans-Canada Highway north of Lake Superior proved to be the undoing of several motorists over the weekend.
Ontario Provincial Police charged three drivers with travelling at more than 50 kilometres an hour over the posted speed limit in the Marathon area.
Two motorists were each clocked at 151 kilometres an hour in a 90-kilometre zone.
The rate of speed for the third driver was not disclosed in an OPP news release issued Monday.
Youth was a common factor, as the drivers' ages ranged between 19 and 21.
Ontario traffic laws provide for several penalties for so-called stunt driving:
- Mandatory 7-day licence suspension
- Mandatory 7-day vehicle impoundment
- Minimum fine $2000, maximum of $10,000
- Six licence demerit points
Drivers are also responsible for vehicle towing and storage fees.
